What Is a Sweepstakes Casino?
What is a sweepstakes casino? Now that is a great question. A sweepstakes casino is an online platform that brings the fun and excitement of casino-style games such as slots, table games, and game shows, and you can play every game with no purchase necessary.
Most sweepstakes casinos use two types of virtual coins: Gold Coins (GC) and Sweeps Coins (SC). Both coins have different use cases and strategies attached to them; the basic thing to know, though, is that Sweeps Coins can be redeemed for prizes; Gold Coins can't.
Which answers our next question: can you redeem real prizes on sweepstakes casinos? Yes, you can redeem eligible Sweeps Coins for prizes, such as gift cards. This is what separates a sweepstakes casino from your run-of-the-mill social casino.
What Are Sweepstakes?
Before we get into how they work, it helps to know what sweepstakes are in the first place. A sweepstakes is a promotion that gives people the chance to receive a prize, with no purchase necessary to enter. You've probably seen them on the back of cereal boxes or in giveaways on social media.
So, what are sweepstakes casinos? They take that same idea and apply it to casino-style games. Alongside a coin used purely for fun, they offer a promotional coin that lets you take part in sweepstakes games, with the chance to redeem prizes. Each platform publishes its own sweepstakes rules, so they're always worth a read.
How Do Sweepstakes Casinos Work?
You might be wondering: how do sweepstakes casinos work if there is no purchase necessary? Most sweepstakes casinos have two main ways to play: with Gold Coins and with Sweeps Coins. Before we explain just how this works, let us first explain what the two types of coins are and how they are obtained.
- Gold Coins (GC): essentially fun coins. They can't be redeemed for prizes, so their purpose is to just be played with for the love of the game. You can use them to try new games, test things out, and just have a good time. They can be purchased, but you'll usually also be granted them each day just by logging in.
- Sweeps Coins (SC): promotional coins that can be redeemed for prizes. Sweeps Coins cannot be purchased directly, but frequent promotions allow you to get them. Some Gold Coin packages include complimentary Sweeps Coins as well. Some platforms give them their own name; at Spree, for example, they're called Spree Coins.
Sweeps Coins can't always be redeemed straight away. Some must be used in games before becoming eligible for redemption. Always check your redeemable balance, instead of your total balance, before you try to redeem a prize.
There are several ways players can obtain Sweeps Coins. They are sometimes included in daily rewards, featured in frequent promotions, and on most platforms you can mail in a request.
Social Casino vs Sweepstakes Casino
The key distinction between social casinos and sweepstakes casinos is the prize redemptions. At a social casino, you can play a host of games, such as online slots, using virtual coins purely for entertainment. At sweepstakes casinos, you can do this too, and you can also play with promotional coins and redeem them for prizes. Social casinos do not offer any prize redemptions outside the games.
What's brilliant about sweepstakes casinos is that both coins can work in tandem in your strategy. Your Gold Coins can be used in an experimental manner to help you practice and learn ahead of using your promotional coins. And certain Gold Coin packages will come with complimentary Sweeps Coins. You won't get this at a social casino.
